Role - Lead Product Designer
Duration - 4 Months
Teammates - Project Manager, UX Lead, Product Designer, Fullstack engineer
Zearn is an educational startup building a comprehensive math curriculum for kindergarten - 8th grade. In 2017 I worked on the product team responsible for designing accessible UI elements across the product experience.
Challenges
Create a consistent experience across devices
Account for a classroom product experience, limited attention span and tech fluency of younger students
Opportunities
Create UI that includes messaging that mimics the feedback students receive in graded papers
Create styles that are appropriate for children
Custom keypad
Students struggle trying to navigate complicated onscreen keypads on tablets and mice and keyboard on desktop.
By creating a custom keyboard, we eliminated unnecessary UI and decreased the space between touch targets.
This also gave us more space on the screen for
Accessibility
Younger students are less tech fluent and are easily distracted, it was important to have minimal UI for those grade levels while having full functionality for older students with more complicated math.
Only necessary UI is shown in the keypad to lessen cognitive load, while guiding students through activities with clear feedback and CTA.
Feedback using color, text, and iconography
Bright colors for iconography and darker tones for text insured we met accessibility guidelines while keeping a youthful aesthetic.
The keyboard animates giving students instant feedback.
